What Are Healthy Eating Habits?

From the Nutritional Pyramid to eat all of your vegetables, your doctor, school health classes and your mother have stressed healthy eating habits. The concept of eating healthy foods has been promoted ever since we learned that what we eat has a direct effect on our health.

Healthy eating is a habit of selecting the quantity and quality of foods that will either improve or maintain a good level of health. Usually, this means following the guidelines set by those who know the best, including scientific researchers, doctors, and nutritionists.

Health professionals set nutritional recommendations based on the ingredients and contents of food items. How fast and efficiently the body breaks down a food item and uses it for energy influences the way certain eating habits are viewed. For example, eating foods filled with sugar will not do much for maintaining a healthy body. The empty calories that sweets have actually aid in weight gain and increased glucose levels, which affect a variety of health concerns, such as diabetes.

The concept of healthy eating has changed over the years. This can be seen through the shift in the commonly used Nutritional Pyramid. In the past, the Pyramid gave daily recommendations on how many servings from each food group was needed to achieve healthy eating habits. Everyone was expected to follow the same recommendations. Today, these guidelines are now based on the differences that individuals have. The new serving suggestions now take into account factors such as weight, height, level of physical activity, age and gender.

Do you ever wonder what happened to the Food Guide Pyramid?

The Food Guide Pyramid was created more than ten years ago by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Pyramid illustrated what the USDA said were the elements of a healthy diet. The Pyramid was taught in schools, appeared in the media and brochures, on cereal boxes and food labels. It seemed like the absolute final word on what we should really eat.

The Food Guide Pyramid is now like a fairytale. It did not point the way toward healthy eating. We are told now the Food Guide Pyramid was based on shaky scientific evidence. It still has not changed over the years to reflect major advances in our understanding of the connection between diet and good health.

Recently, the USDA retired the old Food Guide Pyramid and replaced it with MyPyramid, a new symbol and “interactive food guidance system. This revision is basically the old Pyramid turned on its side.

Good news about the new MyPyramid:

• It tears apart and buries the flawed Pyramid.

Bad news about the MyPyramid:

• The new MyPyramid does not give us enough information to help us make informed choices about our diet and long-term health.

• It continues to recommend foods that are not essential to good health.

• The food quantities recommended may even be detrimental to our overall health.

So…..what do we eat to become and stay healthy?

The 7 Habits Of Highly Healthy People

There are many conflicting theories as to what the experts consider to be healthy. There are multiple different approaches to living a healthy lifestyle. However, all healthy people do have one thing in common. They have formed positive habits that result in their optimum health level. Let’s look at some of these habits a little closer.

Habit 1: Probably the most important habit that highly healthy people have developed is regular exercise. There are many different schools of thought on this subject as well. How much is enough? As a basic rule, any amount of exercise is better than none. Therefore, if you aren’t currently exercising, start out lightly. Don’t try to run the Boston Marathon tomorrow after reading this. No one wants to go to the gym for a grueling, four hour workout. Anyone can fit 20 minutes of exercise in, though. If you exercise for 20 minutes, at least 3-5 times per week, you’ll be healthier than most of the population. If you can eventually bump that up to an hour per day you’ll be doing great.

What type of exercise should you engage in? There are countless exercises that you can engage in that will greatly benefit you. Probably the most convenient forms are walking and jogging. You can do these two pretty much anywhere. Even if you don’t have a treadmill, just go outside. Besides aerobic exercise, a weight training routine is ideal. Developing muscle helps boost your metabolism and keeps everything running smoothly.
